Jalapenos have to be my absolute favorite pepper of all time. They have just the right amount of heat, and are so versatile- you can use them to make sauces- like jalapeno lime sauce, appetizers like Texas toothpicks and jalapeno pickled eggs, and even dips like my favorite jalapeno mayo dip.

This time, I wanted to try making another sauce featuring these bright green peppers, and a copycat recipe seemed like the perfect idea!

Jalapenos: Fresh jalapenos, for that kick of heat. Sometimes, when I don't have fresh jalapenos at hand, I end up using my homemade jalapeno flakes.

Honey: For the sweetness. You can use agave if you want to make it vegan.

Yellow mustard: For that earthy flavor. I love using pungent yellow mustard here, but you can use the mild variety too, if that's what you prefer.

Garlic: Roasted garlic, for that smokiness. I always keep some of my Air Fryer roasted garlic in the freezer to use for recipes like these.

Apple cider vinegar: Just a dash, to balance out the other flavors with its slight tang. You can use regular vinegar too.

Salt & pepper: To season.

See recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Add an extra kick of heat to the jalapeno honey mustard by swapping the apple cider vinegar for some hot pepper vinegar.
  • Another great idea is to add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes to the sauce.

Tips & Tricks to Nail the Recipe

  • If you're sensitive to heat, you can slice the jalapenos and remove the seeds and white membrane on the inside- that's the part that actually has most of the heat. I did this when I made my jalapeno hot honey too.
  • I love the chunky bits of jalapenos and garlic, which is why, I chopped them using a knife. If you prefer a smoother consistency, you can add everything to a jar and blitz it all together with a stick blender.
  • I used yellow mustard here, but you can use any other kind of mustard that you prefer. Start with a little, taste and add more if needed.
  • Sometimes, when I run out of my packaged mustard, I end up using my homemade Chinese hot mustard and it tastes just as delicious!
  • If you don't have fresh jalapenos at hand, you can also use pickled jalapenos! They can be a bit milder, but they'll work.

How to Serve Jalapeno Honey Mustard

There are lots of ways to serve jalapeno honey mustard sauce. You can team it up with your favorite fried snacks and appetizers like hot honey chicken wings or Air Fryer chicken tenders, or even feature it on a charcuterie board with an assortment of cheeses, some deli meat and some pickled eggs and sausage.

And if you have a bit of the sauce leftover, you can thin it out with a drizzle of oil (I love using my habanero hot oil) and use it as a quick and effortless salad dressing.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

How do I store leftover jalapeno honey mustard sauce?

You can store the leftover jalapeno honey mustard sauce in the refrigerator for up to a week, if not longer. Just use a clean glass jar or an airtight container to preserve its freshness.

The sauce turned out too spicy. How do I fix it?

To tone down the heat, you can add a bit more apple cider vinegar and honey. If it still tastes hot, you can add a spoonful of mayonnaise and mix it in!
