How to Freeze and Store Green Onions

Pinterest Hidden ImagePinterest Hidden Image

Freezing green onions takes just a few minutes, but is one of the best ways to make them last for much longer. If you're like me and end up buying a bunch of green onions only to find them wilted in the refrigerator a few days later, you've got to try this easy recipe.

Once they're frozen, I can take out exactly as much as I need whenever I'm cooking. Like my Air Fryer dried parsley, this is one of those essentials I always like to batch-make whenever I can.

This is one of those simple kitchen tricks that helps reduce food waste and makes cooking a little easier. Like my Air Fryer dried dill and homemade orange zest, these frozen green onions are especially convenient for cooked dishes like soups, fried rice, stir-fries, noodles, sauces, and eggs.

I love adding a spoonful of these to my stir fried Teriyaki vegetables and crispy chili chicken.

Green onions: Use fresh, firm green onions without slimy or spoiled sections. You can use both the white and green parts.

See recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Freeze the white and green parts separately. If you frequently use the white and green portions for different purposes, chop and freeze them in separate bags.
  • Freeze in portions- divide the chopped onions into small portions before freezing if you usually use the same amount in your recipes. I always do this when I make Air Fryer ginger powder too.
  • You can also use a a small airtight freezer-safe container instead of a freezer bag.

💭Top Tip

Dry the green onions really well before freezing them. The less excess water on the surface, the less likely they are to freeze into one solid, difficult-to-separate block.

Tips & Tricks to Nail the Recipe

  • I also recommend flattening the bag into a thin layer before freezing. That way, you can easily break off what you need instead of having to thaw the entire bag.
  • Start with fresh green onions for the best results- I always keep this in mind when I make my air fried dried mint too- it really impacts the flavor and freshness.
  • Wash them thoroughly before freezing. Pat them completely dry before chopping.
  • Remove the root ends before storing.
  • Don't overfill the freezer bag. Remove as much air as possible from the bag.
  • Flatten the bag before freezing so the onions are easier to portion. Label the bag with the freezing date.
  • Freeze them in small portions if you use green onions frequently. I like to do this when I make homemade jalapeno flakes.

How to Use Frozen Green Onions

Frozen green onions are best added directly to cooked dishes. You generally don't need to thaw them first.

Toss a handful into fried rice or Asian dishes like Teriyaki chicken, scallion oil chicken and even Kung Pao chicken stir fry. You can also add them to soups, noodles, curries, omelets, scrambled eggs or soy cured egg yolk bowl, or sauces while cooking. You can also sprinkle them into dishes near the end of cooking when you want the fresh onion flavor without needing to chop anything. I usually use them as a topping on my chicken egg roll in a bowl or Sriracha honey shrimp rice bowl.
