This homemade date syrup is delicious, natural and a great healthy homemade sweetener that you can make in just under 30 minutes.
Use it to sweeten everything from your cakes and bakes to your morning pancakes and waffles- it’s super versatile.

There are quite a lot of natural sweeteners out there, and I’ve had the chance to try a lot of them, and while they’re all great, they can be a tad bit expensive. Making date syrup from scratch barely takes any effort and is quite inexpensive too.
All you need to do is spend a few minutes over the weekend to make a batch of syrup that will last you weeks, if not longer- I almost always prep like this for my other staples. What's So Great About the Recipe?
My favorite part about this recipe is that it is completely natural and free of any additives or preservatives. I’m starting to be a lot more conscious about my food choices lately, and this homemade syrup is one of my attempts to use homemade versions of pantry essentials.
Recipe Ingredients

Dates: Use any good quality dates you can get your hands on. Medjool dates are a great choice, but other variants work fine too. Just make sure you pick ones that have a nice meaty texture which is perfect for this recipe.
Halawy, Deglet Noor and Khadrawy are some good choices.

Substitutions & Variations
- For a bit of extra flavor, you can add some lemon juice (and a bit of lemon zest) into the syrup while it is on heat and reducing.
- A pinch of cinnamon powder can also be a wonderful addition to the syrup and can balance the sweetness with its earthy flavor.
Use up your leftover dates from this recipe to make Candied Dates, a delicious sweet snack.
How to Make Homemade Date Syrup

Step 1: Start by soaking the dates in warm or hot water for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2: Use a stick blender to blend them- along with the soaking water. Add more water if needed.

Step 3: Once pureed, sieve the soaked date mixture through a muslin cloth and squeeze out all the liquid in a clean container.

Step 4: Transfer this to a pan or a pot and let it cook over low heat until the mixture is bubbling and reduces to a slightly thick syrup consistency.
💭Top Tip
Remember to use a heavy bottomed pan or pot to reduce the date syrup. This will also help keep the syrup from burning.

How to Store the Leftover Date Syrup
Once the date syrup has cooled down completely, you can refrigerate it for up to 4 weeks in a glass jar or an airtight container. Just make sure you use a clean spoon to spoon it out whenever you’re using it.
If you want to freeze the date syrup, use a freezer safe container or Souper cubes.

Tips & Tricks to Nail the Recipe
- Make sure you clean and pit the dates before you use them for the recipe. Check for any worms or bugs.
- Depending on the kind of dates you’re using, it can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours for the dates to soften.
- Make sure you keep the heat medium-low while reducing the syrup, and keep stirring it to prevent burning.
How to Use Date Syrup
Date syrup is so much more than just a sweetener. You can, of course, use it instead of sugar when making your pancakes, bread, homemade granola and so much more. But not just that, you can also use it for your cupcakes and muffins, smoothies and smoothie bowls and even mix it in some peanut butter to use as a snack with some apples or other fruits.

Recipe FAQs
Soaking is an important part of the process. Doing that helps soften the dates and you’ll be able to blend them more easily.
Check for any changes in color, consistency or smell. If the syrup has an off-putting smell or looks different or unusual, it is best to discard it.
