Rich, creamy and incredibly delicious- this avocado butter spread is an absolute treat for your taste buds, and is an amazing healthy take on your classic breakfast spread you need to try!
You'll need just 6 simple ingredients and under 10 minutes of kitchen time to make it it! Plus, it's gluten-free and customizable too!
Compound butters and spreads are my absolute favorite of all my condiment experiments and creations. A simple garlic avocado spread is my go-to when I have an extra avocado or two at hand and I want to use them to whip up something delicious.
This time, though, I wanted to try something more rich and indulgent, more versatile. And that's when I thought of making a nice avocado spread for toast.

What's So Great About the Recipe?
It's the perfect way to enjoy your morning avocado toast, but on a slightly different note.
The spread is super versatile- you can team it up with veggie sticks, crackers and even with some crusty bread- it makes for a great healthy-ish dip.
And of course, it's ridiculously easy to make.
Recipe Ingredients
Avocado: I love using Hass avocados for this recipe, but you can, of course, use any kind of avocado you prefer. Just make sure they're perfectly ripe.
Garlic: Fresh garlic adds a beautiful layer of flavor and deliciousness to the spread. Swap with garlic powder if you don't have fresh garlic.
Cilantro: Fresh cilantro adds a nice bit of freshness and a pop of color to the spread.
Butter: Salted butter is my choice for this recipe, but you can make do with unsalted butter too, if that's what you prefer.
Lemon juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a nice bit of tanginess and citrusy flavor to the spread, and also keeps it from browning.
Seasonings: I kept it simple and just used a dash of salt and pepper to season the spread. With minimal ingredients, you can let the flavor of the avocado shine!

Substitutions & Variations
- To lend the avocado spread a spicy kick, add a jalapeno into the mix. You can also use jalapeno salt to season the spread.
- Don't have fresh lemon juice? Lime juice can work equally well- just remember to use a little, as its flavor can be a bit more intense than lemon juice.
- If you want the spread to have an extra citrusy flavor, add some freshly grated lemon zest into it.
How to Make Avocado Spread for Toast
In a food processor, combine all the ingredients.
Process until you get a smooth, creamy and uniform mixture.
How to Store the Leftover Avocado Butter Spread
Store your leftover avocado bread spread in a jar or an airtight container with plastic wrap covering its top, exposed surface. Doing this will help keep the avocado from oxidizing and turning dark. You can then refrigerate this for up to 4 days, and enjoy it right from the fridge.
If you want the avocado butter to last longer, you can freeze it too! Just transfer it to a freezer safe bag or container, and freeze it for up to 3 months.
Tips & Tricks to Nail the Recipe
- If the spread feels too thick for your liking, you can thin it out by mixing it with a bit of milk or heavy cream. Do this only if you're planning on using it right away though.
- Another great idea is to mix the spread with some mayonnaise or whipped cream cheese and turn it into a nice dip.
- If you like a bit of texture, chopped onions and tomatoes can be great additions to the spread. Remember to add them in towards the end, when you want to use the spread.
How to Use the Avocado Butter Spread
I love using this spread with some crusty bread and my scrambled eggs or fried eggs, and having it for breakfast. I'm a big fan of spice, so I'll most certainly finish up with some pickled red chillies or my favorite garlic habanero hot sauce on the top.
You can also team it up with some veggie sticks, crackers and nachos and turn it into a dip situation. And of course, it's great when spread on your sandwiches and wraps too!
Recipe FAQs
You'll need to first quickly ripen them and then use them for the recipe. To do this, you can place your avocados in a brown paper bag with a fruit like apple or banana and leave it at room temperature for a day or two.
If the spread looks just a bit dark on the surface, it is most likely not spoilt. All you need to do is use a spoon to carefully remove it, and use the clean, bright colored spread underneath it.
Yes, you can! Simply swap the butter in this recipe for vegan butter, and you're sorted.
