Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients for Olive Oil Pizza SaucePin

Garlic: Fresh garlic is the hero ingredient here. I'm a huge garlic fan, so I used garlic with my heart here. Use as much as you prefer.

Shallots: I also had a few shallots, so I added them in too. Feel free to skip these.

Olive oil: This one's the base of the sauce, so make sure you select an olive oil that's really good quality. Even better, use extra virgin olive oil. You can also use Lemon Infused Olive Oil to lend it a bright, citrusy flavor.

Seasonings: I kept it simple, and just used some dried mixed herbs for that authentic Italian flavor, some red pepper flakes or jalapeno flakes for a bit of heat, and some salt and pepper.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Don't have mixed herbs? Use any Italian seasoning you have at hand and it should work just as well. I love using my Homemade Garlic Bread Seasoning mix sometimes.
  • Add a cheesy twist to this pizza sauce by adding some shredded Parmesan cheese or Pecorino Romano into the mix.
  • To bring a different flavor to the olive oil pizza sauce, swap the shallots for scallion whites.
  • Swap the fresh garlic for some garlic confit or Air Fryer Roasted Garlic to lend the sauce a deeper, smoky flavor.
  • To lend a bit of extra flavor to the sauce, you can swap the olive oil for an infused oil like Garlic Rosemary Infused Olive Oil or Habanero Oil if you want it to have a kick of heat.

How to Store Leftover Olive Oil Pizza Sauce

Store your leftover olive oil sauce in a glass jar or an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. I wouldn't recommend storing it beyond this point, as food safety experts highly advise against storing raw garlic in oil for long.

Tips & Tricks to Nail the Recipe

  • To make things quicker, use a food processor to blitz the garlic and shallots into fine pieces.
  • If you're working with a smaller batch of the sauce and have only a few garlic cloves and shallots, using a food processor may not be a great idea, as the bits can stick to the sides. Use a microplane to grate them instead.
  • Swap the classic salt in the recipe for a flavored salt like Jalapeno Salt, Garlic Parsley Salt, celery salt or Homemade Herb Salt to amp up the flavors.

How to Use the Olive Oil Pizza Sauce

I love using this olive oil sauce to make my homemade pizza Bianca (Italian for white pizza). It's the perfect simple swap for a classic tomato-based pizza sauce.

You can also use it as a dipping sauce for your crusty breads, chips or anything else.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic?

You can, but the sauce will not have that same chunky texture you're looking for, and the garlic flavor won't be as powerful too.

Can I freeze the olive oil pizza sauce?

I wouldn't recommend freezing the sauce, as it can turn bitter and taste unpleasant. It takes just a few minutes to make, so it's best to make and enjoy it fresh.
