What's So Great About the Recipe?
My favorite part about this jalapeno infused honey is the fact that it is actually such a good replacement to your classic hot sauce.
It’s sticky, sweet, spicy and ultra delicious, also offering your body a good dose of antioxidants and vitamin C at the same time.
Plus, it is super versatile too! But more on that later.
Ingredients For the Jalapeno Honey Recipe
You’ll need just 2 ingredients to make hot honey.
Jalapenos: I used fresh jalapeno peppers. Choose ones that have an even, clean skin and are firm to touch.
Honey: I would recommend sticking to regular honey for this recipe. If you use raw honey, there are chances for the infused honey to ferment and bubble up if stored for too long.
See recipe card for quantities.
Substitutions & Variations
- For that extra kick of heat and a bit of texture, you can also add some red pepper flakes into the honey mixture.
- I used jalapenos for their mild kick of heat, but if you want a bolder flavor, you can use hotter peppers like habanero or serrano peppers instead, or even a combination of two different peppers if you want to.
- You can also bring an extra layer of flavor to this sweet and savory honey by adding some whole garlic cloves or coarsely chopped ginger into it along with the jalapeno peppers.
How to Make Jalapeno Honey
Once you have all the ingredients needed, here's what you'll need to do to try this infused hot honey recipe.
Wash and dry the jalapenos. Slice them thinly and set them aside.
Transfer the sliced jalapenos in a small glass jar.
In a nonstick saucepan on medium heat, slightly warm the honey and then transfer it to the jar with the jalapenos.
Let it cool, put the lid on it and store in the fridge.
How to Make Fermented Jalapeno Honey
I used heated honey to make this recipe, but you can also try making fermented jalapeno honey by just combining the raw honey with sliced jalapeno peppers, and letting it sit in a cool, dark place for a week.
You’ll know the honey is fermented when you notice it having a slightly runny consistency.
💭Top Tip
If you want a clear honey, you can also choose to remove the peppers and strain it before you use it.
How to Store Jalapeno Honey
This infused honey has a long shelf life. Your jar of honey will last for up to 3 months if you store it in the fridge. However, I would recommend you use it within a month, just to be on the safe side.
Just remember to use a clean glass jar or an airtight container to store it, and use a clean spoon every time you want a spoonful of this delicious condiment.
Tips & Tricks to Nail the Recipe
- I would recommend slicing the jalapenos thin- around ¼ inch. This will help all the delicious spicy flavor infuse well in the honey.
- If you want your hot honey to be less spicy, you can reduce the amount of jalapenos you’re using, and even choose to remove the seeds and ribs before you add it into the honey.
- I also like to use some of this honey to batch make some hot honey butter.
- Also remember to let the honey stay in the refrigerator and allow the flavors to develop before you actually use it. The heat from the jalapenos should start seeping in within a couple of days.
- Keep in mind that refrigerating the honey will cause it to crystallize, but that doesn’t make it inedible. You can easily fix the consistency by placing the jar of honey in a water bath or letting it come to room temperature and then using it.
How to Use the Infused Honey
This jalapeño hot honey is ridiculously easy to make, and is the perfect versatile condiment to have in your kitchen.
You can use it to lend your favorite foods some sweet heat, but that’s not all. Here are a few good ideas to get you inspired.
As a Drizzle
This sticky, spicy jalapeno hot honey can also be a great drizzle over your grilled meats, pizzas and pastas. It can act as a beautiful glaze that lends these foods so much flavor.
You can also use it to jazz up your simple mashed potatoes, and it is perfect to team up with your fried foods and snacks. I love spooning some of it over my chicken wings and fried mozzarella sticks.
The honey infusion can also be great when paired with some classic cornbread.
In fact, I love using it over my breakfast eggs, waffles and even my avocado toast.
As a Dressing
This version of hot honey can also double up as a great base for your salad dressings and vinaigrettes.
I like using it to whip up a nice honey mustard or a honey garlic vinaigrette.
The sweet and hot flavor of the infused honey can really amp up your simple salads and grain bowls.
This hot and spicy honey can also be an amazing flavor bomb that you can use over your baked brie or your whipped cream cheese and transform your all time favorite party appetizers in minutes.
Recipe FAQs
If you don’t have fresh jalapenos, you can add some heat into the honey by using any other hot peppers of your choice.
I wouldn’t recommend using flavored honey. For the perfect sweet and spicy kick, using your regular honey.
If you want to make a vegan hot honey, you can use a plant based sweetener like agave or maple syrup.
